The stonemason Guido Scaramucci "Ricciolo" explains that:
The hammer was made of iron not steel because the chisel is made of steel and when tapped with a hammer also causes cracks in the steel chisel and chips that can injure hands and face. Therefore, the hammer was done with the iron. But the chisel steel consumes iron and over time form a hole in the hammer. We then filled it with pieces of iron taken from the blacksmith and beat crushing up to fill the hole.
